leading
-
The spacing between lines of type.
Pronounced to rhyme with “bedding”, rather than “pleading”. That’s because the word comes from the days of metal type, where a typesetter would insert thin strips of led between the lines of type in order to increase the spacing between them.
On the web this tends to be called “line-spacing”, and so many digital-native designers are unfamiliar with the term “leading”.
