NRS social grade
-
Created in the 1950s, the NRS social grade was an attempt to classify households in the UK based on the occupation of the head of the household.
The resulting classifications were:
- A (higher managerial, administrative or professional)
- B (intermediate managerial, administrative or professional)
- C1 (supervisory or clerical and junior managerial, administrative or professional)
- C2 (skilled manual workers)
- D (semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers)
- E (casual or lowest grade workers, pensioners, and others who depend on the welfare state for their income)
Although these classifications are considered to be outdated and incredibly simplistic, you’ll still hear them used regularly – particularly in groupings, such as “ABC1”.
